Kosgei Named OVC Female Track Athlete of the Week

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Eastern Kentucky University junior Lydia Kosgei has been named the Ohio Valley Conference Female Track Athlete of the Week following her performance at the Kentucky Invitational this weekend in which she finished fourth in the mile with an OVC-best time of 4:47.69.

Kosgei competed against a loaded field at the E.J. Nutter Field House and placed fourth out of 39 runners, including competitors from schools such as Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and Michigan State. The only collegiate runner to defeat Kosgei was Tennessee’s Chanelle Price.

The Eldoret, Kenya native’s time of 4:47.69 is the ninth fastest indoor mile time in the country so far this season. It is also the third fastest indoor mile time in school history. The indoor mile record is 4:42.90, held by Jamie King.

Kosgei earned her first career OVC title last spring when she won the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:39.99 at the OVC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She redshirted the cross country season this fall.

Kosgei and the rest of the EKU track and field team return to action this weekend at the Indiana University Gladstein Invitational.
