EKU Cross Country Defeats Marshall at Home Meet

RICHMOND, Ky.
– The Eastern Kentucky University men’s and women’s cross country teams opened the 2010 season by defeating Marshall at the EKU vs. Marshall Relays on Saturday morning at the Wood Chip Trail. The men’s team scored 21 points to Marshall’s 39 while the women’s team scored 15 points to Marshall’s 40.

The men’s field ran a three mile race while the women’s field ran a two mile race. The top five finishers from each team contributed to the team’s overall score in the dual meet.

Sophomore Soufiane Bouchikhi won the men’s race with a time of 13:53.0, out-pacing his nearest competitor (teammate David Mutuse) by nearly 26 seconds. Sophomore Jackline Barkechir, meanwhile, narrowly won the women’s race with a time of 11:27.8, narrowly edging teammate Kat Pagano by under three seconds.

On the men’s side, junior Mutuse finished second with a time of 14:19.0, freshman Ole Hesselbjerg finished fifth in 14:29.0, sophomore Daniel Jones finished sixth in 14:50.0 and sophomore Alex Dreyer rounded out the Colonels’ top five finishers by placing seventh overall with a time of 15:01.0.

David Caldwell’s was Marshall’s top finisher, placing third overall with a time of 14:26.2.

On the women’s side, the top five overall finishers were from EKU. Senior Pagano finished second with a time of 11:30.0, junior Danielle Mason finished third in 11:55.0, senior Sylvia Bundotich finished fourth in 11:56.0 and freshman Natalie Field rounded out the Colonels’ top five by finishing fifth overall with a time of 11:59.0.

Leslie Thomas was Marshall’s top finisher, placing sixth overall with a time of 12:01.0.

The cross country Colonels return to action on Sept. 18 when they compete at the WKU Old Timers Classic in Bowling Green.
