MOREHEAD, Ky.—
Competing against the region’s and nation’s best runners will be the task at hand for the 2010 Morehead State men’s and women’s cross country teams as coach Tommy Barksdale announced his programs’ schedules this week.

The schedule features a mix of familiar and newer races for the Eagles.

“We are very excited about this upcoming cross country season. We have put together a schedule that will help the teams to see better competition and hopefully reach our goals,” said Barksdale, who is prepping for his second season as coach of the Eagle harriers. “We will start off with Dayton, which is a tradition. We have also added the Old Timer's Classic, held by WKU, and Pre-Nationals held by Indiana State. We have gone to the races in the past and are looking forward to heading back to them. It will give both of the teams a chance to really compete.”

The starting gun for the season will sound at the Dayton Flyer 5K on Sept. 4. The Eagles have competed in this season opening race for the past decade. After a weekend off, MSU will travel to Bowling Green, Ky., for the Old Timer’s Classic on Sept. 18. The race will feature some of the region’s strongest programs, and MSU will be competing here for the first time in several years after being a regular in the event a few years ago.

On Oct. 2, the Eagle teams will be at E.P Tom Sawyer State Park near Louisville for the Greater Louisville Classic, the state’s largest cross country meet featuring more than 30 collegiate teams and some of the nation’s front runners for the NCAA national championship.

The squads will split up on Oct. 16. The women will head to Bloomington, Ind., to compete in the Indiana University Meet while the men will be a short distance away in Terre Haute, Ind., at the Pre-Nationals. The men will be facing the nation’s elite in this precursor race to the national championship run on the same course as the Division I title race.

The schedule continues on Oct. 30 when the teams will be in Cookeville, Tenn., for the Ohio Valley Conference championships. This year’s championships will be held at Southern Hills Golf Course. Last season, both teams finished sixth.

The season will conclude on Nov. 13 at the NCAA Southeast Regional. Both squads will be competing for the chance to move on the NCAA championships.
