GREENSBORO, N.C.
– Eastern Kentucky University senior distance runner Joseph Maina finished 12th overall in the men’s 5,000 meters with a time of 14:13.36 at the NCAA East Region Track and Field Championships on Saturday night. Maina missed qualifying for the NCAA National Championships by one spot.

The top five finishers from each heat and the next two best times overall advance to Eugene, Ore. for the NCAA National Championships from June 9-12. Maina placed eighth in heat two, but was the third next best time overall. The fifth finisher in heat one, Princeton’s Donn Cabral, actually placed 13th overall with a time of 14:13.68. Therefore, Maina actually recorded a faster time than a runner who will be heading to the national championships.

Maina qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2008 and 2009.

The native of Ruiru, Kenya finishes his EKU career with the third-fastest 5,000 meters time (14:06.43) in school history.
