Distance And Throws Lead Morehead State Tracksters After Day One At OVC Championships

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. –
Morehead State track and field scored 16 points in the first day of competition at the 2010 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships. Led by distance runners and throws athletes, the Eagle men have already surpassed last year's total score at this year's meet at Tennessee Tech’s Tucker Stadium. The Eagle men scored 16 points and despite several strong performances, the MSU women did not score.

“I felt we had a great start to the conference meet, we scored more points than we did last year, anchored by [J.T.] Stone in throws and [Josh] Wakeman in the 10 K. [Michael] Settles helped in the 3K Steeple as well.” said Head Coach Tommy Barksdale “We are on are way to where we want to be.”

The men’s 10,000 meter run was an exciting race that concluded with Wakeman finishing strong in third place with a time of 31:56.45, grabbing six points for the team.

Settles picked up two points for the Eagles with a fifth place finish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in a time of 10:08.77. Ron Duncan also competed hard in the race and finished with a time of 10:21.58.

Pete Negron competed in the 100 and 200 meter dash, clocking a time of 12.08 in the 100 and 24.86 in the 200. Early in the afternoon, Sean Blair recorded a jump of 5.95 meters in the long jump.

Stone turned in a strong performance to lead the Eagles in the throws. Stone stood atop the podium in third place in the shot put with a heave of 15.34 meters. Josh Alford recorded a shot toss of 12.14 meters to finish in eighth place and Michael Wright had a toss of 11.95 meters.

Stone missed a podium finish in the discus placing in fifth place with a hurl of 42.99 meters. Alford and Wright also recorded throws of 32.19 meters and 28.51 meters in the discus.

On the women’s side, Tara Henry and Bree Massie ran in the 200 meter dash, Massie finished with a time of 27.53 and Henry crossed the line in a time of 30.24. Henry also ran in the 100 meters, clocking a time of 14.79.

Lauren Seebach battled in the 400 meter run finishing with a time of 1:09.79. Amanda Faust, Natalie Norman, and Holly Mandzak all ran in the 800 open run. Mandzak clocked a time of 2:31.65 and Norman finished in a time of 2:32.98, while Faust crossed the line in 2:37.25.

In the throws, Marybeth Harmon recorded a toss of 9.06 meters in the shot put.

“If we can continue are progress into tomorrow we will have had a successful conference meet and we will be taking our program in the direction we want too.” said Barksdale “We are looking for everyone to continue to compete in every race they enter.”

Standings on the women's side of the meet have SEMO leading after day one action with 72.50 points, Eastern Illinois in second with 64 and Tennessee Tech is in third with 47 points.

On the men’s side, the Eagles are currently in fifth place with 16 points, EIU leads with 76 points, SEMO is second at 68 points and EKU is third with 28.

The final day of the championship is tomorrow beginning with the women’s hammer at 9:00 a.m. ET. The running events start at 11:00 a.m. ET., with the Opening Ceremony at 9:45 a.m.
