COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Eastern Kentucky University men’s team sits in third place while the women’s team sits in seventh place after day one of the OVC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Tucker Stadium on the campus of Tennessee Tech.
On the men’s side, Eastern Illinois scored 76 points on the first day to take the lead. Southeast Missouri State scored sits in second place (68 points), EKU in third (28 points), Tennessee State in fourth (26 points) and Morehead State in fifth (16 points).
For the women, SEMO leads after day one with 72.5 points. EIU is in second (64 points), host TTU in third (47 points), Austin Peay in fourth (27.5 points), TSU in fifth (21.5 points), Jacksonville State in sixth (20.5 points) and EKU and Murray State tied for seventh with 10 points apiece.
Both the men’s and women’s teams are expected to advance in the standings tomorrow as the scored finals of most running events take place tomorrow.
Senior
Joseph Maina and sophomore
David Mutuse both delivered individual titles for the Colonels on day one. Maina won the men’s 10,000 meters with a time of 30:23.74. It is his third career individual OVC track and field title (he won the 5,000 meters at the outdoor championships in 2008 and the 1,500 meters at the outdoor championships in 2009), and his first ever title in the 10,000 meters. Mutuse, meanwhile, won the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:39.72. It is his first career OVC title. He finished third in the steeplechase last year as his teammate,
Stanley Mugo, won with a time of 9:11.94.
Several other Colonels scored points on the day.
Junior
Kat Pagano, who was ranked first in the OVC in the women’s 10,000 meters heading into the meet, finished second in the event with a time of 38:09.57.
Sophomore Jeremy Webb finished sixth in the men’s long jump with a leap of 22-03.75.
Junior #Robert O’Malley# placed fifth in the men’s shot put with a toss of 44-03.5.
Freshman Chaz Grider finished sixth in the men’s discus with a throw of 137-10.
Although they did not score points, sophomore
Diamond Benjamin finished first in the preliminaries of the 100 meters with a time of 12.10 and sophomore
Lutisha Bowen placed first in the preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.32. Both will go for individual OVC titles tomorrow.
