David Mutuse was named the Ohio Valley Conference Male Track Athlete of the Week on Tuesday. Mutuse ran a 14:46.02 in the 5,000 meters at the UT Sea-Ray Relays on Friday, then drove up I-75 the next morning and won the 10,000 meters at the University of the Cumberlands Invitational with an OVC-best time of 30:53.36.
Mutuse placed 11th in the 5,000 meters at the UT Sea-Ray Relays, and his time of 14:46.02 is the third fastest time in the conference behind teammate
Soufiane Bouchikhi’s 14:02.61 and his own 14:41.47.
The Makueni, Kenya native then won the 10,000 meters at the Cumberlands with a time of 30:53.55, which edges SEMO’s Jason Lumpkin’s time of 30:59.75 as the best in the OVC so far this year.
This is Mutuse’s first career weekly OVC honor. He is expected to be a key runner for the Colonels at this year’s OVC Outdoor Championships, where, last year, he finished third in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:29.59 and fourth in the 5,000 meters in a time of 14:56.43.
The Colonel track and field team returns to action this Friday at their home meet, the EKU Open, which is held at Tom Samuels track on the campus of EKU.
