Cross Country Teams Earn All-Academic Status

– The Eastern Kentucky University men’s and women’s cross country teams have been named Division I All-Academic Teams by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

For a team to be considered for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team award, they must have competed and compiled a team score at an NCAA Regional Championship and also have a minimum 3.00 team cumulative GPA.

The EKU men’s team compiled a GPA of 3.04 while the women’s team compiled a GPA of 3.30.

A record total of 135 Division I men’s programs received USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors, up from 2008’s total of 110. There were also a record total of women’s programs that received All-Academic Team honors with 176.

Both cross country teams won their fourth consecutive OVC titles this year as well. Junior Wesley Ruttoh was named the OVC Male Cross Country Athlete of the Year and freshman Picoty Leitich was named the OVC Female Cross Country Athlete of the Year. After finishing second at the Southeast Regional Championships, Ruttoh competed at the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind.

The men’s cross country team earned its fourth straight OVC Team Sportsmanship Award following the season.
