LOUISVILLE, Ky.
– The Eastern Kentucky University men’s cross country team took eighth place while the women’s team took seventh place at the Greater Louisville Classic held at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer Park on Saturday. The meet featured 76 teams from 16 states and was billed as the largest college cross country meet ever contested in the south.

Host Louisville won the men’s race while Kentucky finished second. EKU defeated such notable schools as Purdue, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt.

Senior veteran Stanley Mugo paced the men’s team, finishing 21st out of 334 runners while completing the 8K race in 24:37.84.

Junior newcomer Wesley Ruttoh was not far behind Mugo, finishing 23rd with a time of 24:39.88.

Seniors Elkana Kurgat (77th, 25:31.55) and Chris Rengifo (79th, 25:33.61) and sophomore Alex Dreyer (98th, 25:44.62) rounded out the Colonels’ top five finishers.

Junior Evans Kiptoo – a 2008 first team All-OVC cross country selection and a four-time OVC track and field champion – did not run at the meet because of injury.

Former cross country and current indoor track and field Colonel Joseph Maina ran unattached at the race and finished seventh overall with a time of 24:10.87.

Purdue won the women’s race while Kentucky took second and host Louisville placed third. The Colonels finished ahead of the likes of Mississippi State, Middle Tennessee State, Belmont and Ole Miss.

Freshman Picoty Leitich continued her strong start to the 2009 season, finishing 13th out of 291 runners while running the 5K course in a time of 17:45.16. The time is 41 seconds faster than her previous best time this year.

Junior veteran Katherine Pagano was the Colonels’ second finisher, placing 20th overall with a time of 18:04.02.

Juniors Sylvia Bundotich (58th, 18:38.68) and Lydia Kosgei (59th, 18:38.71) and sophomore Danielle Mason (66th, 18:44.25) rounded out EKU’s top five finishers in the race.

Both Colonel cross country teams will return to action in two weeks, on Oct. 17, at the NCAA Pre-Nationals meet in Terre Haute, Ind.
