RICHMOND, Ky.
– After a strong showing last weekend at the Vanderbilt Commodore Classic, the Eastern Kentucky University women’s cross country team is now ranked 14th in the southeast region in the latest U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll.

The southeast region is one of the largest of the nine regions in the nation, consisting of all NCAA Division I schools from the states of Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. The region also features all Atlantic Coast Conference schools.

EKU is now ranked just behind South Carolina and just ahead of Appalachian State.

The Colonels entered the 2009 season unranked.

Freshman Picoty Leitich led EKU last Saturday by finishing third out of 148 runners with a time of 18:26.27. The native of Kenya was named the OVC Female Runner of the Week for her efforts.

The men’s cross country team, meanwhile, held steady at No. 9 in the southeast region, just ahead of such schools as North Carolina and Kentucky.

Both teams return to action this Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Greater Louisville Classic.
