Nutter Field House Reconfigured For Potential COVID-19 Surge

One of Kentucky's primary health care systems, UK HealthCare, which is based on Lexington, has reconfigured the University of Kentucky's Nutter Field House to hold 400 hospital beds to prepare for a possible in-patient surge due to the coronavirus, the provider revealed this month.

Announced in early April by the healthcare provider, the plans were expected to take two weeks to implement at the facility, which also holds Kentucky's indoor track and field complex. The plans included partitioned rooms, nurse stations, heavy duty cots, break rooms, shower units with sanitization, laundry service units and temporary power units which can "ensure potable water for food services, shower and restroom."

Most importantly, the new reconfiguration will hold 400 hospital beds, which will help meet the demands of any possible surge of patients due to life-threatening complications surrounding the coronavirus.

"As the Commonwealth's health care provider for advanced and critical care, it is essential that we are prepared for any scenario to ensure we are meeting the needs of our community and Commonwealth," UK's executive vice president for health affairs Dr. Mark F. Newman said in a release on April 3.
