RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University men’s and women’s cross country teams hosted Kentucky and Marshall at the Colonels’ home meet on Friday at the Wood Chip Trail. Kentucky won both the men’s and women’s races while EKU took second in both.
The meet operated in a relay format and saw each male runner run two two-mile legs and each female runner run three one-mile legs.
Kentucky’s Matt Sonnenfeldt won the men’s race with an overall time of 19:02.1
EKU senior
Stanley Mugo took third with a time of 19:22.6. Junior college transfer Wesley Ruttoh (19:36.3) and sophomore
David Mutuse (19:37.0) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, while sophomore
Alex Dreyer (20:07.9), junior
David Willis (20:18.0) and senior
Elkana Kurgat (20:21.) placed 11th, 12th and 13th, respectively.
In the women’s race, Kentucky’s Chelsea Oswald won with a time of 15:54.6
Freshman
Picoty Leitich was the Colonels’ top finisher, placing fourth with a time of 16:52.9. Junior Katherine Pagano, the women’s top runner from a year ago, finished fifth in 17:00.0. Junior
Ashli Joseph (17:28.0) and sophomore
Danielle Mason (17:29.4) placed 12th and 13th, respectively.
The men’s cross country team returns to action on Sept. 19 when it travels to Bowling Green for the WKU Old Timers Classic. The women’s team runs the same day at the Vanderbilt Commodore Classic in Nashville.
