Lindsey Wilson Women Win Mid-South, Former NH Star Chanel Roberts Named Frosh of the Year

COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson women's track and field team won their first ever Mid-South Conference Track and Field Championship on Saturday at James H. Taylor Stadium in Williamsburg, Ky.

The Blue Raiders finished with 185 total team points to top the leaderboard. Cumberlands (Ky.) finished in second with 174 total team points.

The victory marks the first time in Lindsey Wilson track and field history that the Blue Raiders have won the Mid-South Conference Championship.

Lindsey Wilson was able to build their lead after sweeping the podium in multiple events.

In the 5,000 meter race walk, Reini Brickson led the way with a first-place finish after completing the race in 26:28.10. Amanda Bland took second in the event at 28:34.25 and Jourdann Green finished third with a time of 29:00.18. The trio combined for 24 total team points.

The Blue Raider women also went 1-2-3 in the 400 meter dash event. Kimberley Stevens finished in first with a time of 1:00.49, followed by Kailey Moorhead in second at 1:00.73 and Renee Hurd in third with a 1:00.74. The trio racked up 24 total team points in the event while Moorhead and Hurd both set personal records.

Chanel Roberts accumulated a pair of event wins and 29 total team points on the day in four events. She took first in the shot put with a school-record 14.70 meters. The distance was a MSC Championship record by over two meters and Roberts now ranks third in the NAIA in the shot put.

Roberts added another victory in the high jump after setting a new school record with a height of 1.60 meters, finishing just shy of the meet record height of 1.62. She added a fifth-place finish in the 100 meter dash after setting a personal best time of 12.94 seconds to pick up four more points. Roberts also finished fourth in the long jump on Friday for five points.

For her efforts, Roberts was named the MSC Women's Track and Field Freshman of the Year.

Kimberley Stevens took second place in the heptathlon accumulating 3,567 total points. She finished first in the 200 meter dash, 800 meter run, long jump and javelin throw heptathlon events to finish 56 points behind the first-place finisher.

Stevens also place second in the triple jump with a distance of 11.10 meters to pick up eight points.

Moorhead placed first in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.94 seconds, followed by Stevens in third with a personal best time of 27.23 seconds and Hurd in eighth with a time of 28.07. The trio accumulated 17 total team points.

Katie Hartney won the hammer throw event setting a new MSC Championship record and personal best with a distance of 45.66 meters. Hartney added a seventh place finish in the shot put hitting a distance of 10.86 meters for two points.

The 4x100 meter relay team of Tori Collins, Kerry-Ann Walker, Rachel Wesley and Kaitlyn Davis finished fifth with a time of 55.82 for four points. Walker took sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 10.00 meters to earn three points.

In the high jump, Nacia Johnson took sixth and Rachel Green took seventh, both setting personal bests in the event and adding five team points.

Johnson set a school record in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.35, picking up six points.

In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, Bland set a season and personal best with a time of 13:02.08 to take seventh place and two points.

Individual event winners earned First Team All Mid-South Conference honors.

Head coach Jamaine Gordon was named the Women's Track and Field Coach of the Year and was thrilled with how his team combined their efforts at the championships.

"It was incredible how everyone came together and stepped up in the events, whether it be running, throwing or jumping, right when we needed them to," Gordon said.  "I've been telling the team all year we have to take care of business at the right time and we did that today."

The Blue Raiders will now begin preparations for the NAIA Outdoor National Championships beginning on May 22 in Gulf Shores, Ala.
