Former Franklin County Star Robert Sandlin Named GLVC Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS – Bellarmine University senior distance runner Robert Sandlin, Jr., and Lewis University sophomore jumper Matthew Simmons have been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, it was announced on Wednesday.

Sandlin finished fourth overall and was the third-placing collegian in the mile at the University of Kentucky Invitational last weekend with a time of 4 minutes, 9.99 seconds.  His time met the NCAA provisional standard and is currently tops among all conference milers and fourth nationally.  The Frankfort, Ky., native earns his third weekly honor of his indoor career as he was also recognized on Jan. 16 and Feb. 13, 2013, which was also the last time a Bellarmine trackster earned the award.

Simmons met the NCAA provisional mark in the triple jump last Friday at the Lewis Invitational, leaping 47 feet, 3.5 inches (14.41m).  His jump currently leads the conference and is 17th nationally.  Simmons also won the long jump with a mark of 22-5.75, which tied him with teammate Kyle Rohde for the GLVC lead in that event as well.

The Calumet City, Ill., native is the second consecutive Flyer to earn GLVC Field Athlete of the Week as Adam Barr was honored with the award last Wednesday.  This is Simmons' first career weekly accolade.
