Berea teams broke out their brooms for a clean sweep, starting on the boys’ side.
Williamsburg’s Garrett Faulkner kicked off an impressive individual performance with a big lead after mile one at 5:27. Berea’s duo of Lincoln Satterthwaite (5:37) and Lincoln McKinney (5:44) followed. Rounding the lake Faulkner extended his lead at a 9:57 pace, with the Berea pair next. Eric Grant of Oneida Baptist and Harlan Independent’s Mason Miller battled each other for fourth place during the entire race and were neck and neck at this point.
Faulkner glided to the individual regional championship with a time of 17:21.34, with Satterthwaite second at 18:17.19 and McKinney third at 18:30.67. Grant and Miller continued their battle at the finish line, with Grant taking fourth by two seconds.
Berea finished first as a team with 43 points, and Jackson County took second with 63. Oneida Baptist, at 72 points, will also move on to state.
Faulkner and Miller will compete at state as individuals and will be joined by Tristin Krause of Somerset, Nathan Rininger of Model, and Williamsburg’s Addison Anderson.
Berea and Williamsburg continued their rivalry in the girls’ race, with Selena Mattingly of the Williamsburg Lady Jackets breaking out at 6:15 at the one mile mark. Model’s Janie Ward was second at 7:11, but Berea Lady Pirate Bailey Rosenbarker made a move and led the race at the two-mile mark. Mattingly regained the lead for good with 600 meters to go and won the individual crown with a 20:10.86 time. Rosenbarker held tight for second at 20:36.16, with Ward (21:57.27) third. Berea edged Williamsburg 23 to 35 for team honors, and both groups will now move on to state.
Punching their state tickets as individuals were Ward and teammates Reagan Cole and Coco May of Model, Oneida Baptist’s Mianna Baker, and Heather Wilson of Lynn Camp.
