My team will start their summer training in another week. Curious to see what some other teams do during the summer.

What kind of milage load will your team be carrying?

What type of training do you suggest for summer training(distance, tempo's, fartleks, intervals, or hill training)?

Do you have cross runners that do summer track?

What are your feelings on this situation?

How do you transition them into your program for cross country training?

What teams will be fighting for state championships?

What teams will make big improvements?

Who are the top runners returning?

What individuals should we look out for?

Any other topics concerning the 2009 Cross Country Season.

Since I coach MS I can't help, except for the impact of MS kids moving up to HS. Overall the strong will get stronger. Look for more depth from Butler, St. X, Trinity, South Oldham, St. Henry and the Owensboro area schools plus quite possibly Assumption and Sacred Heart. This is more so true on the boy's side since there were not a lot 8th grade girls at the top and many girls were already running HS.

Haha, so if you don't have any good MS kids coming in, does that mean you're doomed?

    ===

What kind of milage load will your team be carrying?
At least as much as quickslick's team! Basically, I roll a dice each week and then multiple the number I get by 10. That number then becomes our weekly mileage. It's a very scientific system.

What type of training do you suggest for summer training(distance, tempo's, fartleks, intervals, or hill training)?
We do what I call "just run". No thinking, just go out and run to how you feel. If you feel like crap one day, then run like crap that day. If you feel good another day, then run better. From there, we gradually move into a fairly typical periodized season I suppose.

Do you have cross runners that do summer track?
Nope. Most of our's celebrate when track is over.

What are your feelings on this situation?
First of all, I don't control what our kids do when I'm not allowed to contact them. That would be a bit too controlling in my opinion. I provide advice, and let them know the costs and benefits, but it's their call. It's not much of an issue with our team because most of them are counting the days until Track ends. My basic message for distance runners is twofold: (a) you can train or you can race, but it's pretty hard to simultaneously do both, and (b) you should always take some sort of break after any competitive season.

How do you transition them into your program for cross country training?
I assume you mean in general. After track ends, it's rest, followed by "just run".

What teams will be fighting for state championships?
I assume here that you mean girls. I'm under the impression that no one really cares about the boys on this forum, do they? Let's see, expect Manual and SHA to be good. Manual adds a couple pretty good runners and SHA gets at least one good girl from Track (Means) and returns a good team. Dunbar's always good as is Daviess County, so you can't really talk on this topic without mentioning them. There's always some "new teams" that aren't necessarily in the mix each year, so for the rest of the list we'll have to wait and see. Oh yeah, hopefully that other Louisville team, the one with the weird coach and about 150 girls, will be decent next Fall as well.

What teams will make big improvements?
It won't be a big improvement in the sense that slow runners will suddenly be good, but Manual should be (in my opinion) a favorite for the Girls 3A title because they add the Hale twins to a group with lots of talent.

Who are the top runners returning?
In 3A, I hear there's this girl named Brink or something like that who's pretty good. I'd expect continued strong performances from Miss Mattingly at John Hardin, who only seems to get better every year, and Gonzalez (Ryle) impresses me quite a bit as well. Catarina Karas, who has the highest speed per cubic inch of body mass ratio on the planet, should return to her form from last year. The Dunbar duo should only be stronger, and a few other girls should find their way back to the top of the heap.

What individuals should we look out for?
Well, if you're talking new individuals, I'd say Julia Means (SHA), as she is supposedly running CC next Fall. You'll also have the Hale twins (Manual) and maybe a couple more. Always the sneak-ster, I hear Quickslick is supposedly bringing in some Kenyan exchange students to Connor too.

Any other topics concerning the 2009 Cross Country Season.
Yes, I'd like to invite all the field event athletes to come on out and watch a Cross Country meet. Who knows, if we could get some of those Hendos out there, maybe a username like HendoCross might eventually pop up!!!

What kind of milage load will your team be carrying?
Freshmean - 20 to 30 miles per week
Sophomores - 35 to 40 miles per week
Juniors - 45 to 50 miles per week
Seniors - 55 to 60 miles per week
*This is generally speaking; some may do a little more, some may do less. My program is all about progression tailored to the individual.

What type of training do you suggest for summer training(distance, tempo's, fartleks, intervals, or hill training)?
The early part of the summer is strictly comfortable milage. I tell them maybe once (at most twice) per week they can pick up the pace and do a good hard run. Towards the end part of the summer we will start doing a mixture of tempo's and fartleks and then mix in some hill training.

Do you have cross runners that do summer track?
    Yes, quite a few.

What are your feelings on this situation?
Pretty much the same as the Prof's. I let them make the decision. But if the ask specifically would I recommend it, I tell them "If I thought it was the best summer training for a cross runner then I would have all my guys do it".

How do you transition them into your program for cross country training?
I was actually talking about transitioning from summer track to the cross country training. I generally give them a week off and then do every other day the next week and slowly work them into the cycle we are on.

What teams will be fighting for state championships?
I will speak on the boys AAA. It looks to me like it will be St. X out front and then several teams fighting for the next couple of positions. It will take a monster effort to take down X. The other teams I see in the top part of AAA are Trinity, Daviess, Butler, and Apollo (mentioned in no particular order as far as rankings are concerned). There are a few other teams that could very easily be up there if they have a runner or two step up and make a big impact on the team. These teams include Connor, Greenwood, and Shelby County. To round out the top 10 I would go with Dunbar, Meade County, Other teams to watch out for are Manual and Oldham County.

What teams will make big improvements?
The two obvious ones from the top are Meade County, Oldham County. Another team that had a pretty strong young group of guys last year was Eastern, if they can do their work over the summer, they could really step up. My dark horse for the year is North Hardin.

Who are the top runners returning?
Ryan Eaton, Stacy Eden, Justin House, Jackson Carnes, Thomas Mann, Jake Wildemann, Robbie Scharold, Joey Brendal, Andrew Stewart, Rob Wahl, and David Bruce. Guys that could potentially step up and make some big noise: Matt Hillenbrand, Ian McCaslin, Sean Breeds, Sean Vandermosten, Dillion Raidt, Luke Weishar, Evan Ehranheim, Ryan Smith, Jared Skrabacz, Austin Houchens, Allen Matthews, and I am hoping the biggest improvement comes from Darius Berry. My dark horses for the season, I have to go with three that I have inside tracks on Christian Black, Michael Caldwell and RaShaun Langdon.

What individuals should we look out for?
Tretez Kinnaird is my early pick for Freshman of the Year. Then Connor Sheryak, Thomas Cave, Jacob Thompson, and Alex Beckerson. These are a few of the more established names out there. I am sure there will be others that start running in high school that will make big impacts on different teams.

What kind of mileage load will your team be carrying?
    7th Graders - 10 to 15 mile per week
    8th Graders - 15 to 20 miles per week
Freshmen - 20 to 30 miles per week
Sophomores - 30 to 40 miles per week
Juniors - 40 to 50 miles per week
Seniors - 50 to 60 miles per week

The girls on out team will be doing about 75% - 80% of the weekly mileage. This is so that in any given week our girls and guys are running about the same amount of time.

The above numbers represent our max weeks. We start at about 60% of these totals and bump the mileage every few weeks until we reach the above totals. (It takes about 10 to 12 weeks to get to max.)

This is just our general guidelines. Each individual's training can vary within this framework.

What type of training do you suggest for summer training (distance, tempo's, fartleks, intervals, or hill training)?
The first two weeks is nothing but easy running. Then after two weeks we add in a tempo day and a light speed day (some barefoot 200's at mile pace) each week. Then right before the end of the summer we add in some hill work

Do you have cross runners that do summer track?
    None.

What are your feelings on this situation?
    I

The Bowling Green Girls squad will be in the top five all year and maybe finish in the top three. The girls are very young but placed five 7th graders in the top 25 at middle school state and winning the title. There were three eight graders that did not run middle school state or middle school at all during the year including one that was 2nd team 3A. I will predict that this squad will win state in 2011 and 2012.

The compition will be seeing double as there are two sets of twins on this team.

First, let me say that there's no doubt BG will be very good this year. They return several extremely talented (and also very friendly) runners, and a coach who seems to be doing an excellent job with them. But you're making a pretty bold statement when talking about a group of 7th and 8th grade girls. Going back to 1997, there hasn't been a group of girls that has won middle school state, stayed together as a group and gone on to win high school state.

If you look back at the girls teams that have won MOC, you'll find that many of those teams were composed of girls who did not continue running after middle school, or did not all attend the same high school after middle school. You'll also find many girls who did run in high school, but simply did not perform at the same relative level as they grew older. I'm firmly convinced that long-term predictions based on success at the middle school (or elementary level) are virtually worthless, due to many factors, including the inevitable physiological changes, potential health and injury issues, the development of different interests, our increasingly rootless society, and ever-expanding demands for full time involvement in other sports.

I agree wholeheartedly with Jason0677 when he says there are too many variables from one season to the next to venture a prediction, except in the case of teams who return a large group of proven upperclassmen, which returns me to the topic of this thread, the 2009 season. I think the usual suspects will be strong again. On the girls side, aside from the two obvious choices, Manual and Eastern look like they will be pretty tough. It would not surprise me in the least to see Bowling Green and Dixie Heights (also very young) in the mix as well. Of course, there will also be some surprises.

Can't wait for the season to get started!

It is kind of hard to call Daviess a surprise especially with their tradition. Now they do have to replace a lot with Miller and Hale, but those young'ns they have will do.

this doesnt pertain to any of the questions but its news about the upcoming cross country season. eric neuhaus will be coaching st. henry's guys team again after coach wolf announced she is stepping down to move back home to ohio. neuhaus coached the team that won state titles from 2002-2006.

Most if not all kids that attend BGJHS go onto BGHS. I understand that girls can and do change more than boys and I have seen this with my own daughter. Bold it is, but I will stand by it. These girls are a close group with supportive parents, booster club and good coaching. They will win middle school state again this year.

I think Robert Sandlin will be a surprise. He won the 2 mile in 2a state beating Jacob Law at 9:38 and he keeps taking big steps each year. I see him as a top 3 overall runner in the state this year

I think that Sandlin will be in contention, but obviously we will keep watching the development across town at Western Hills to see how Thurston develops. I for one am wondering what North Oldham has up their sleeves after laying low for the most part during track season. James Brown had a really solid track season and Joey Landrum had a monster cross season last fall so look for them to contend as well. My preseason favorite to run everyone off the course is Taylor Sanders, but that's just me...

Other teams to watch in Class AA will be Calloway as they reload well this year after their second place finish. Covington Catholic had quite the track season and doesn't lose much. Webster, South Oldham, and Pendleton have the most coming back after North Oldham and Covington Catholic and I have a feeling Pendleton will be up this year after they looked to be the favorite coming into last year.

St. Xavier is my early favorite to win it all. Carnes, Mann, and Hillenbrand could all be in the top 5 at state. Trinity, Butler, Daviess are the other top teams in my mind.

Does anyone have a shot at single A besides brossart, sthenry or villa?

Better question does anyone have a chance besides St. Henry. BB and VM both lost their #1's. What about Owensboro Catholic?

that doesn't mean much considering st henry lost 2 of its top 3 runners.

i know walton brings back lil jmac and trevin p. who are both potentially top 5 runners. if they can get a half way decent supporting cast they will be up there come november.
