September 08, 2012 @ Creasey Mahan Nature Preserve in Goshen, KY
The Rumble Through the Jungle has quickly over the last few seasons developed into one of the largest meets in Kentucky and this year's version is no different. This year's theme is #1 Showdown, for teams and individuals.
The Varsity Girls race is headlined by Gabby Karas. Just an 8th grader, but already a state XC champion opened last week with an 18:35 crushing the competition. This week she will look to do the same, but she will be challenged by 3-time Class A champ Maddox Patterson from Sayre. Patterson opened up her season with the top time in Class A at Tiger Run with a 19:28. She will need to get back in the sub 19 range to win this year after winning last year at Rumble with an 18:54. If Karas and Patterson challenge each other the whole race this could easily be in the 18:30s. Woodford County's Mia Cornette, Etown's Hannah Godfrey, and Butler's Rose Jolly are other runners to watch out for in the next group.
The girls team race is led by AAA #9 Butler and AA #3 North Oldham.
The Varsity Boys race is a battle of #1's. AAA #1 St. Xavier vs. AA #1 North Oldham vs. A #1 St. Henry BOOM!!!!!!
St. Xavier comes in as the favorite but they will be doing what they did last year and probably run a 2 mile Tempo Run and race the last mile. The team will be short handed due to the ACT. Seniors Sam Lewis, Nick Reader, and Thomas Cave will not be competing. But with St. Xavier that is not a major issue as they still have Connor Sheryak, Max Mudd, Chris Streigel, Mark Johnson and huge crew of JV kids the dominated Tiger Run.
North Oldham's boys are making their season debut or at least some of them are. Super frosh Trenton Fryman ran and won the 4k Freshmen Race with a 13:12. But the rest of the top runners all practiced through Tiger Run in preparation for Rumble and Trinity next week. The AA defending champions should have Fryman up front along with Luke Tarvestad, Nolan Ruhs, David Terkula, and David Gardiner. Can they take down a partial but still loaded St. Xavier squad.
St. Henry came into the season with a lot of former JV runners and Daniel Wolfer. Those JV runners have developed quickly and are running strong. 9th grader Josh Hannon is solid at #2 currently sitting at #14 in Class A. This team will get another chance to show where it ranks in the state after placing 6th at Tiger Run coming in 3rd among 30 plus Kentucky schools.
Hilliard Darby from Ohio is another school to watch.
The individual race is wide open with Sheryak being the favorite, but that even depends on the workout approach they take to the meet. Butler is attending, but AAA #1 Patrick Gregory is resting up for Trinity next Saturday. Class A #2 Nicholas Waltman and #3 Daniel Wolfer should have a nice little Class A dual with one of them pushing for the win possibly.
Once the high schools are done, stick around for the middle school races as they are loaded. North Oldham Middle will look to continue their early season winning streak. The boys race will have Michael and Nathan Sheets of Highlands Latin once again will battle with Logan Otter from North Oldham. They have traded spots over the last couple weeks. Doug Burris from Lafayette has been added into the group as well. Whoever wins is going to run fast no doubt.
The girls race has East Oldham, South Oldham, and North Oldham going at it with Bullitt East. Keely Wells (St. Edward), Clara Lynch (SOMS), and Hallie Searcy (SOMS) are threats for the win.
