September 01, 2012 @ Masterson Station Park in Lexington, KY
Hosted by Henry Clay
The first Lexington invitational is ready to roll on Saturday at Masterson Station Park. The Henry Clay Invitational is going to have teams mainly from the Lexington area in the first of many competitions between the schools this season.
The Varsity Boys team competition looks to be a head to head against Tates Creek and Paul Dunbar. Tates Creek opened up their season last week at the Tiger Run with senior Adrian Lyttle leading the team with a 16:58 with sophomore Ben Young right behind him at 17:00 in his first XC race ever. Paul Dunbar going into their first race returns nearly their complete squad from last year. Malik Mahmud led the team last year with a 6th place finish at the Class AAA Region 6 Championship. Tates Creek looks to be stronger up front, but the pack of Paul Dunbar is tight and very balanced. During the 2012 track season, frosh Elijah Olige ran a 1:56.80 in the 800m. He has decided to run cross country for the first time this year and his potential makes this Dunbar very interesting. Team race should be tight if both squads actually have their entire crews.
The front duo of Layne Gaynor and Scout Bundy from North Laurel should break up the all Lexington party near the front.
The Varsity Girls showdown is between Tates Creek and Class AA #5 Fleming County. Each of the teams is strong up front with Tates Creek having Emma Anderson and Fleming leading with Abby Fearin. Anderson opened up her season with a 21:14 at Tiger Run, while Fearin and Fleming have yet to run. Individually, Abby Florence of Paul Dunbar is coming off a strong track season and should mix it up it the front group.
