KYtrackXC.com:  3 Goals for the Year

Joe Mallek:  My 3 goals are to break 16, top 3 in state and be top runner in Oldham County.

KY:  Favorite Course
JM:  My favorite course is the state course at the Kentucky Horse Park.

KY:  Favorite Race
JM:  My favorite race is the Trinity Invitational because of the great competition and the how huge the race is.

KY:  Track or XC, why?

JM:  Cross country because I enjoy 5ks and the cross country environment.  The team in cross country is a closer group and we have a lot of fun during the season going to races and competing as a team and working hard at practices together and pushing each other.

KY:  What did it feel like getting 5th at state last year?
JM:  I learned from state and pretty much through the entire season how to run my race. I learned how hard to go out and really how hard I can really push myself.

KY:  What did you learn from your track season in 2008?
JM:  From track I learned how not to train, I changed my training for track season and I was burned out half way into the season. It was to long and hard of a season for my body.

KY:  What kind of mileage have you put in this summer?
JM:  This summer I have put in about 50 miles a week just base building with a tempo run here and there. Now that our practices have started were starting to do more with tempos and different cross training workouts in the place of easy runs to take some the stress off.

KY:  Distance Run or Mile Repeats?
JM:  Mile repeats hands down, I like any kind of speed or repeat work out.

KY:  What do you think of having plenty of competition from your neighbor schools in Oldham County (NO and SO)?
JM:  I think the competition from Jacob Law at South Oldham has pushed us both to become better. We run together and we're pretty good friends and I know having some one at a rival school who is at the same level defiantly helps me to push myself.

KY:  What else do you like to do besides run?
JM:  Besides running I work a lot as a Lifeguard at the YMCA and a local Country Club. Our XC team does a lot of stuff like seeing movies and hanging out during the season and we have all have fun with that. But when it's XC season it’s eating, sleeping and running not much else.

KY:  Are you ready for Tiger Run?
JM:  I'm defiantly ready for Tiger Run; my training is going very well. I've been running faster than ever and feel very strong, so I'm defiantly looking forward to Tiger Run to see what I can do.

KY:  Have you been watching the Olympics, what have been your favorite events?

JM:  In the Olympics I'm looking forward to the Marathon which is tonight, but so far my favorite event has been the 400m. I've also gotten really into beach volleyball watching Rogers and Dalhousie winning Gold and also the women taking Gold as well
