LEXINGTON, Ky.
– The Eastern Kentucky University track and field team opened its 2011 indoor season this Friday and Saturday at the Kentucky Invitational in the E.J. Nutter Fieldhouse. Junior Lydia Kosgei highlighted the weekend by running the third fastest women’s indoor mile time in school history.

Kosgei, who came on strong at the end of last year’s track and field season but redshirted this year’s cross country season, finished fourth out of 39 competitors with a time of 4:47.69. The only collegiate runner to beat her was Tennessee’s Chanelle Price. Her time is the fastest in the OVC this season and the ninth fastest in the country.

Senior Kat Pagano and junior Lutisha Bowen also ran OVC bests for the women’s team this weekend. Pagano finished eighth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:51.12 while Bowen placed 13th in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.70.

Juniors Evans Kiptoo and David Mutuse led the men’s team with their performances in the 3,000 meters. Kiptoo finished fifth and Mutuse finished seventh out of 46 runners with times of 8:18.46 and 8:19.61, respectively. Kiptoo’s time is the fastest in the OVC and the 16th fastest in the country while Mutuse’s time is the second fastest in the OVC and the 20th fastest in the country.

Sophomore Soufiane Bouchikhi finished ahead of Kiptoo and Mutuse in the race but was disqualified for breaking early.
