Scharold and Mason lead performances at USATF Youth National Championships

Following up the completion of the World Youth Team Trials yesterday, there is more action to speak of today and the rest of the week. Today saw athletes from Kentucky jump into the 5000 meters, the prelims of the 200 meters, and even a 4x400 meter relay.

Robbie Scharold (Campbell County) led the group in the 5000 with a great time of 15:51.81 taking 5th place. Finishing 6th overall was Ryan Smith (Dixie Heights) in 16:01.18 and coming in 9th was Brett Pierce (Scott) in 16:58.25.

In the 200 meters, Ben Mason (Lafayette) won his prelim running 22.16 and will be seeded 3rd in the finals. Others competing in the 200 included Dalan Carter (Dixie Heights) running 23.74, Kyle Hocker (Dixie Heights) in 23.87, and Nathan McKinney (Dixie Heights) came through in 24.59.

Finishing off the Kentucky Performances on the day was the Northern Kentucky Track Club running the 4x400 meter relay. Their finish time of 3:33.05 placed them 4th in their heat and 9th overall, just one spot out of qualifying for the finals.

Tomorrow looks to have more to talk about with the first round of heats for the 100, 400, and 1500 scheduled.
