Legislature Passes Bill Regarding Homeschool Athletes

PER A KHSAA PRESS RELEASE:

During its 2018 Regular Session, both houses of the Kentucky General Assembly approved HB290, and the bill was signed into law by the governor on April 2. See the full text of the bill at http://www.lrc.ky.gov/recorddocuments/bill/18RS/HB290/HCS1.pdf with a digest of the proceedings at http://www.lrc.ky.gov/record/18RS/HB290.htm. With the signing by the governor, the bill will go into effect on July 1, 2018, for KHSAA member schools.

The bill will necessitate an amendment to KHSAA Bylaw 22, Sec. 1 (listed at https://khsaa.org/handbook/bylaws/20172018/bylaw22.pdf) and this amendment will be done through the normal regulatory approval process this spring. Member schools will be able to engage in competition, should they choose, against homeschool units or involve homeschool students enrolled in Kentucky beginning with the 2018-2019 school year.

This change DOES NOT allow KHSAA member schools to participate against other schools located in located in Kentucky that have chosen not to join the KHSAA but will allow KHSAA members to compete against homeschool students or groups of homeschool students in regular season competition. Students not enrolled full time in a KHSAA member school remain ineligible to compete for KHSAA member schools or to compete in KHSAA sanctioned postseason play.

If you have further questions, feel free to contact the Commissioner's office.
