Senior Sendoff: Reese Helton - Corbin High School

Athlete Name: Reese Helton

School: Corbin

What was your most memorable meet and why?

My very first meet at Cave Lake in Monticello, KY when i was in 6th grade. It was absolutely freezing cold and a woman had a pet raccoon on a leash that i got to hold :-)

Where did you face your biggest competition?

In my own backyard. Senior year, an 8th grader joined our team and she gave me a run for my money (literally). Before this year, i didn't really have anyone to train with and Hannah came along and became the best running partner i've had in a long time.

Out of all of your high school accomplishments which stands out the most and why?

I've been running cross country since i was 11, and all these years we've never gotten Region Champion or runner up. My senior year, our girls team got region runner up and beat 3rd place by one point and we finally got to hold one of the region trophies. Probably the greatest accomplishment ever.

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?

I would probably try harder than before. There is always more you can give to the sport, even when you feel like you can't.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

Junior year i started having some health problems that really hindered me from practicing and running to my full ability, but I eventually became better and continued to improve.

What will you miss the most?

I'll definitely miss my teams "post meet" parties where we would just get together and eat candy and watch scary movies after all the meets.

Do you have any advice for younger athletes?

Keep your legs strong, keep your breath steady, and keep your mind focused on what you're there to do.

What are your post-highschool or college plans?

Attend Morehead State University and major in Pre Dental.

Who would you like to say thank you to?

Coach Martin, Coach Lanham, Coach Harris, Coach Goodin, my wonderful parents, and all the teammates i've had over the 8 years i've ran cross country.
