KTCCCA Hall Of Fame Coaches Inducted

The Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association are pleased to announce that the following Coaches will be inducted into the KTCCCA Coaches Hall of Fame

On January 7, 2017 at the KHSAA Hall of Fame Room in Lexington, Kentucky.  Information on reservations for the Hall of Fame Banquet will follow later this week.

 

Congratulations are in order for the following coaches . . . . .

 

Arthur Ed Davis - Christian County High School

John Durbin - St. Mary High School

Larry Watkins - Eastern High School and Oldham County High School

 

See below a brief resume of the accomplishments of these three outstanding coaches

 


Arthur "Ed" Davis - Christian County HS - Hopkinsville 

Nominated by:  Chuck Gullo, Craig Hopkins and Pat Rowland

Location:  Retired Coach still living in Hopkinsville

Ed was a 1965 graduate from Clarksville High School in Tennessee and went on to Austin Peay State University for a BA and MA.  He had further studies at Murray State University.  For the past 44 years he has been coaching Track and or Cross Country.  He started his coaching career at Fort Campbell in 1970 and stayed for two years before returning to Austin Peay as an Assistant Coach for one year.  In 1973 he took a coaching and teaching job at Christian County High School and he stayed for 41 years.

 

Coaching Accomplishments:  His Girls Track and Field teams captured 5 Regional Titles and one Sectional Title in of the toughest Regions in Kentucky.  His track and or cross country teams collected . . .

o    170 Regional Individual Champions in Track and Field

o    3 Regional Individual Cross Country Champions in Boys Cross Country

o     3 Regional Individual Cross Country Champions in Girls Cross Country

o    21 Individual State Track and Field Champions

o    1 KTCCCA Elementary Individual State Champion

o    4 Cross Country Runners received All-State status

o    2 Individual State Cross Country Runner Ups

Coaching and Life Honors

o    KTCCCA Area 1 - Elementary Coach of the Year in XC 2009 and 2010

o    KTCCCA Area 1 - Coach of the Year in XC in 2010

o    KTCCCA Area 1 - Coach of the Year in Track in 2011

o    KTCCCA Area 1 - Middle School Coach of the Year in XC for 2011

o    KTCCCA Area 1 - Elementary Coach of the Year in XC for 2013

John Durbin - St. Mary HS - Paducah

Location:  Retired Coach still living in Paducah

John was a 1974 graduate of St. Mary and went on to Westminster College where he obtained is BA in 1978 and was a 4 Year letterman in both sports at both schools.  He began his coach career in Fall of 1993 at his Alma Mater St. Mary in 1993.  He was head coach for 6 short years through Spring 1999 and then he retired from coaching but he was a personal coach for Jackie Wagner for her final 3 years at St. Mary contributing to her amazing success in cross country and track and field.

 

Coaching Accomplishments:  His Cross Country teams were a Class A power house as during his 6 years as Coach of St. Mary.  In girls cross-country his squad for Regional champions all six years.  They were State Runner-up 2 times and State Champions 3 times.  In his six years he had 14 individuals finish in the top 15 at the state meet.

His boys cross country team were Regional XC Champions 4 times and State Champions in 1998.  Distance runners from St. Mary were dominant in Cross Country and  Track during the Durbin era.

o    1 KTCCCA Runner of the Year in Girls Cross Country

o    3 Individual Regional Boys' Cross Country Champions

Larry Watkins - Eastern and Oldham County HS

Location:  Retired

Coach Watkins was a graduate of Valley High School in 1961 where he ran track and cross country and track and was Regional Champion in the Long Jump and a state meet finalist.  He went on to Western Kentucky for his undergraduate studies and was a 4 year member of the Hilltopper Track and Field Team.  He received both his Masters and Rank 1 from the University of Louisville.  His first coaching job was at Eastern High School in 1966 where he coached for 8 years.  He left education for 4 years and then returned to coaching in the Oldham County school system.  He coached Oldham County high school for 10 years he then became an Administrator in the Oldham System until his retirement and then he came back and coached Oldham County for 6 more years.  For 25 years he was a track and field coach in the Greater Louisville area.

 

Coaching Accomplishments:                                                      

o     While at Eastern High School, his teams were County Champions seven of the eight years there and were runner up the other year.

o    His Eastern Track and Field teams were the KHSAA State Runner up team five times and third three times.

o    His Eastern Track Team won the Regional Championships all 8 years he was at the helm.

o    At Oldham County his Track and Field teams won 3 Regional titles and Sectional titles.

o    He has over 30 Individual Regional Champions and some won multiple events each year.

o    Has coached a Regional champion in every event in Track and Field

o    At the State Meet he has coached a State Champion in every event but the 100 Yard Dash.

o    Over 20 individual State Champions and some in multiply events.

 

Coaching and Life Honors:

o    Three of his best athletes were state Champions numerous times

·          Lonnie Hance . . . Regional and State Champion 3 years in a row and an All-American at the University of Tennessee.

·          Celia Tyson . . . Regional Champion in the 110 Meter hurdles for 5 years and in the 300 Meter hurdles for 4 Years.  She was state champion in both events for 3 straight years.

·          Nancy Crutcher . . . one of Kentucky's all-time great distance runners and multiple time state individual titles.

·          Was named the Regional Track and Field Coach of the year 9 times.

·          State Coach of the year one time.
