Polio and McCain Pull Away to Win

One could argue the weather Saturday created the perfect day for the State Cross Country Meet and probably be correct.  With this great weather, the course was blazing as the times were fast, fast, fast!!!!  Congratulations to all the teams and runners who participated in the final day of the Kentucky High School Cross Country 2007 Season.

AA Girls

This was one of the most wide open races of the day.  There was no clear front runner but this did not stop Kelsey McCain (Pendleton County) from running away from the rest of the field.  McCain crossed the line with a 19:22 to win her first state title.

The Bell County girls, ranked #2 coming into the State Meet, came out on top to win their second team title in three years.  They beat defending champion Muhlenberg South.  Bell County was led by sixth grader Kelly Brown’s fourth place finish.

AA Boys

Coming into this race, Owensboro Catholic senior Willie Polio had established himself as the clear favorite to win.  This held true as Polio crossed the line first with a 15:56.  At the one mile, Polio, Brian Mirrielees, Aaron Poore, and Thomas Canary led coming through in 5:06.  The race was still tight at the two mile with Polio leading Mirrielees and Canary.  With a half mile left, Polio threw on a surge to leave the others behind.

Polio led Owensboro Catholic to their third straight team title as they put five runners in the top twenty-three.leaders
