William Mulloy 15:07 & Maggie Allen 17:38 tops in Kentucky 5K showdown

The rarely contested high school 5K on the track was seen run on Friday at Christian Academy in Louisville, Kentucky for the third annual KYtrackXC.com 5K showdown. Quick times were posted across the board with 4 boys running under 15:20 and two girls under 18 minutes. St. Xavier's William Mulloy was able to finish the strongest in the boys field to pull away from Barr-Reeve's Jarit Perkins (2nd, 15:07), St. Xavier teammate Chris Striegel (3rd, 15:07.97), and Davies County's Daniel Southard (4th, 15:15.39). Mulloy won with a 47 second PR performance of 15:05.07. The St. Xavier junior Mulloy was coming off a 4:14.15 mile all-time best performance last weekend in the emerging elite division at the New Balance Nationals.

After coming close to her first sub 18 minute 5K two years ago at the end of the 2012 cross country season with a time of 18:04 at the Foot Locker South Regional, Sacred Heart Academy junior Maggie Allen will enter next fall as a sub 18 minute runner following her 17:38 victory at the KYtrackXC.com 5K showdown. Allen, who missed this past cross country season entirely due to injury, had 2013 Kentucky state cross country champion Whitney Bryan of Davies County (2nd, 17:47.52) before she was able to make a late move for the win with a 26 second personal best drop at 17:38. Despite the fall season setback, Allen looks already back to her from last spring when she claimed a Kentucky state title at the 1600 meter distance (5:04 PR).
