Taylor Bradley helps lead UL to DMR School Record, Cave, Stewart, & Eaton on Men's 2nd Place Squad

NEW YORK – The University of Louisville track and field teams put together a solid first day at the American Athletic Conference Championships on Friday in New York. Louisville’s men are first in the team standings, while the women are second.

By the end of the day, the Cardinals had three event champions: Sam Bombaugh, Patrice Gates, and Ernest Kibet.

Bombaugh won his second-consecutive weight throw title, taking first with a season-best mark of 19.16m/62-10.50. The senior came into the meet with the top mark in the conference and improved upon it en route to his third victory of the year. Teammate Brad Vivace finished fourth in the event.

Similarly, Gates won the women’s weight throw competition after entering the meet ranked first in the league and 26th nationally. The senior, who was tied for second heading into her final throw, scored the winning mark of 20.06m/65-9.75 on her sixth attempt.

Louisville’s third champion came on the track in Kibet. The sophomore led a 1-2-3 finish in the men’s 5,000m, completing the race in a season-best time of 14:31.16. Edwin Kibichiy and Tyler Byrne finished second and third, respectively, as the trio combined for 24 of the men’s team’s 59 points.

Agnes Chepchumba, in the women’s 5,000m, ran to a sixth-place showing in a personal-best 17:21.52.

Louisville’s jumps group, which has excelled under the direction of assistant coach Joe Walker Jr., had a pair of runner-up performances in the long jump.

Guillaume Victorin, on the third-best jump in school history, finished second with a mark of 7.91m/25-11.50. Ben Williams, the top seed in Saturday’s triple jump competition, finished sixth, and Nick Kennedy recorded a personal best of 7.09m/23-3.25 to take eighth.

In the women’s competition, Brittany Owens led three top-eight finishes. The sophomore scored a career-best 6.17m/20-3 to take second in the event and register the third-best mark in school history. Freshman Bre’Yana Wash compiled a solid showing in her first league championships, taking sixth with a leap of 6.06m/19-10.75. Kim Cardeiro, who struggled through an injury in her left leg, finished seventh to give the women’s team 14 points.

In the pole vault, Chanel Krause continued to build upon her impressive season. The freshman from Mobile, Ala., finished in sixth place after clearing the bar at 3.88m/12-8.75.

Louisville had all three of its runners in the men’s mile qualify for Saturday’s final. Andrew Stewart registered the third-fastest time overall with a mark of 4:13.71. Mattias Wolter finished 10th, and freshman Thomas Cave checked in at No. 12.

The distance group also had solid showings collectively, with both the men’s and women’s distance medley relays finishing runner-up in their respective races. The women’s quartet of Emily Bushey, Taylor Bradley, Kelsey Cramsey, and Michelle Molodynia clocked a time of 11:41.34, a new school record.

Earlier in the day, Cramsey and Bushey each punched their tickets to Saturday’s 800m final. Cramsey broke from the middle of the pack in her heat and went on to win it with the second-fastest time overall of 2:11.41. Bushey secured the final spot, taking eighth overall.

Louisville’s sprinters advanced three to the respective finals. Calvin Arsenault finished second overall in the men’s 60m hurdles, while Brianne Brown moved on in the women’s section of the event. In the men’s 60m, Jermaine Parrish put together one of his best races of the season, taking sixth overall in 6.92 to earn a spot in the title race.

In the multi-events, Hannah Cox compiled a collegiate-best total of 3,135 in the women’s pentathlon. The redshirt sophomore won the long jump with a collegiate-best 5.87m/19-3.25.

Action continues on Saturday, March 1, at the Armory with the one of the three final heptathlon events. Marcus Motill competes in the 60m hurdles at 8:45 a.m. followed by the women’s high jump at 9:45 a.m.
