Former Daviess County Runner Michael Cable Killed in Afghanistan

Former Daviess County runner Michael Cable was killed in Afghanistan last week while serving in the United States Army.  At the 2001 Kentucky State Cross Country Meet he was 21st overall leading Daviess County.  He is the 2nd member of that running class at Daviess County to lose his life joining Josh Yeckering who passed away in 2011. He was also in the military, but his death was unrelated to his service.

KYtrackXC.com asked the first family of Owensboro running about memories of Michael.

Daviess County Head Track Coach Tony Rowe, said " Michael was a very determined young man.  Life was often a struggle for Michael, even in middle school and high school, yet he found ways to excel. Michael was a very bright, solid student.  He won our 7th man spot as a freshman in cross country and had a good State Meet run, then followed that with a 22nd place state finish as a sophomore.  For different reasons, he was not able to compete at State his junior and senior year but kept plugging along.  Michael was a survivor and had to overcome more adversity than young people should have to face, but he was also a fun-loving, often mischievous, loyal to his family, friends, and certainly to his country.  I am honored to have been called “coach” by this young man that died an American hero."

Cable's teammate Matt Rowe from high school, who currently coaches at Daviess County said, "Michael's attitude was contagious.  He loved life, cared deeply for his friends, and was always the first to make you laugh.  He was the type of person that always had your back, even though he might be going through a tougher situation at the time.  His friendship was so sincere and Michael is someone that none of us will ever forget."

Owensboro Head Coach Mark Rowe said, "Michael Cable was an incredibly loyal teammate to his "brothers" at Daviess County and a very good friend to so many people.....he was always happiest when around those he cared about.  He loved life and lived it to the fullest.  He died on Wednesday as an American hero serving his country.  I will always smile when I think of Michael and will miss him tremendously."
